Expert Board and Leadership Training FAQs

1

What does a leadership, governance, and strategic planning consultant do?

A consultant in this space helps organizations strengthen how they are led, how decisions are made, and how direction is set. This includes clarifying roles between boards and staff, improving leadership alignment, and building strategic plans that are actually implemented—not just written and forgotten.

The focus is on practical implementation—not just recommendations. The work is grounded in real organizational challenges, with an emphasis on clarity, accountability, and sustainable change.

2

How do I know if my organization has a governance problem?

Common signs include unclear roles between the board and staff, ineffective or unproductive meetings, constant turnover in leadership, and decisions being delayed or revisited repeatedly. If accountability is unclear or conflict is frequent, governance is often the root issue.

3

What’s the difference between governance and management?

Governance is the responsibility of the board and focuses on oversight, direction, and accountability. Management is handled by staff and focuses on execution and day-to-day operations. When these roles overlap or become unclear, organizations experience inefficiency and conflict.

4

What types of organizations do you work with?

We primarily work with nonprofits, student associations, and mission-driven organizations across Ontario. This includes boards made up of volunteers or elected members, as well as organizations experiencing leadership transition or growth.

5

What does a strategic planning process involve?

A strategic planning process includes assessing your current state, identifying priorities, facilitating leadership discussions, defining clear goals, and building an actionable roadmap. The focus is not just on planning, but on implementation and measurable outcomes.

6

How long does a consulting engagement typically last?

This depends on the scope of work. Some projects, such as targeted governance reviews, may take a few weeks, while full strategic planning or leadership development engagements may span several months.

Workshops are often used to align leadership teams, train boards on governance best practices, and facilitate strategic planning sessions. These can be delivered in-person or virtually.
